The Brecon Beacons National Park is a mountain range that runs through the centre of South Wales, renowned for its inspiring and open scenery. The Beacons is also the training ground of the SAS – as you can imagine the routes will provide you with testing climbs, steep descents and challenging terrain. Both the 25km and 50km routes will summit one of the highest peaks in South Wales, the famous Pen y Fan (886m), it will be a challenging adventure but once you make it to the top you’ll discover sensational views of the Brecon Beacons, with its rolling mountains and hills, stretching as far as the eye can see.

We leave the Event Village in the opposite direction to the other route and spend some time walking on country roads following sections of the Three Rivers Ride path. After approximately 9 km we make our ascent to Pen Y Fan. From the checkpoint we head up onto the ridge of Cefn Cwm Llwch and we soon summit Pen Y Fan where we momentarily join other routes before beginning our ascent under the Corn Du ridge. As we descend into the valley we get views of the lake below us and upon reaching it we follow the valley before our final leg back on country roads to the Event Village.

We leave the Event Village and spend some time on the Taff Trail next to the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal. We walk along the canal until we enter Talybont Forest followed by the Taf Fechan Forest. As we exit the forest we begin our ascent to Fan y Big. After summiting there, we ascend a bit further to summit Pen y Fan. From here, we will descend and then re-join the Taff Trail. Our route back will be on country roads on and off the Taff Trail before entering Brecon and back along the canal to the Event Village.

What a totally awesome weekend! Thank you everyone at Trekfest for a super time. The whole event was so well organised and although the route was incredibly hard at times, the views were spectacular and the people we met were second to none. Thank you so much for the best weekend for a long time – Joanne Stewart and Vicky Challis aka the Sibling Striders!
